Peter Mearns
Peter Mearns was born in Dorking, Surrey, moved to Southampton when he was 11 and studied at Southampton College of Art and Manchester Metropolitan University. He started his career with BBC Manchester as a production assistant and has worked in a number of high profile marketing and communications roles, most recently as Executive Director of Marketing & Communications with the Northwest Development Agency.
During his long and varied career, Peter has been involved in developing brands and identities for the cities of Manchester, Birmingham and the Northwest region and for major events, including Liverpool’s 2008 Capital of Culture. He has worked closely with designers and photographers to create strong visual imagery used in campaigns to promote places and events to UK and overseas markets.
Peter has always had a strong interest in the visual arts and during his time in the Northwest he has done much to support the development of the sector. He is a council member of Arts Council England – Northwest and Tate Liverpool and a trustee of the Foundation for Arts and Creative Technology (FACT) and the Aerial Trust, Liverpool.
His own photography has been a lifetime passion. In 1986 he accompanied a journalist from the Birmingham Post and Mail to photograph the famine in northern Ethiopia. In 1990 he took a series of photographs whilst travelling in Pakistan which were featured in a major exhibition. His photographs of local events have appeared in newspapers and web-sites where he lives in Flintshire. He has also produced work for book publishers cities500 and the Woodland Press and last year was commissioned to photograph Liverpool’s presence at the World Expo in Shanghai.
Peter has a particular interest in travel photography and photojournalism.
He currently works as an independent Marketing & Communications Advisor.
