We Are Activists is a collaborative, multimedia, documentary project born out of the Lightbox course of the Redeye Photography Network, which will be exhibited as part of Look11: Liverpool International Photography Festival and is a response to Look11′s theme of “photography as a call to action”. The group consists of six photographers working together with documentary maker Christian Payne.
We Are Activists looks at a range of activists working in disparate causes, such as mental health, disability, human, rights, mothers against violence and asbestos. We Are Activists poses the question “is seeing believing” by documenting the activists in their home or going about their daily lives, rather than focusing on the work of activism directly.
Through the multimedia approach We Are Activists will build up profiles of the activists, to be displayed on a purpose built website that will include photos, videos and audio. We Are Activists is interested in how activists spread their messages, so the website will include live, real time links to websites, blogs, Facebook accounts, Twitter feeds, YouTube videos and any other web based resources used by the activists featured in the project.
We Are Activists will engage members of the public directly with activists, by including ways in which they can communicate directly, be it via instant messaging, email or live video conferencing.
There will be an exhibition at Look11: Liverpool International Photography Festival, as well as the We Are Activists website. News of these will be disseminated using guerrilla marketing techniques across the city of Liverpool including the use of QR codes (website links embedded in barcode like images that can be read on smart phones). In this way We Are Activists hope to reach a larger audience, in particular those who might not ordinarily visit a photography exhibition.
We Are Activists looks directly at the ways in which we as a society can now communicate and poses questions about what our perceptions of activism is.
