Control is a new collaborative project by photographers with strong connections to the north of England. The project brings together 9 photographers under the mentorship of Dewi Lewis, to create a unified body of work under the theme of control. Each photographer has set out to explore aspects of control, or indeed lack of control, through a variety of subjects. from the architecture of educational institutions, to individuals seeking to regain control over their own lives, questioning areas of \'wilderness\' and the human impact, exploring the controlling factors which impact on people’s everyday lives in China, to perhaps the most powerful act of self-control, a study into vows of silence. We are photographers very much in the developmental stages of our careers. We were brought together during the one week Lightbox course run by Redeye, geared at equipping photographers with the knowledge and skills required to meet their goals and succeed in an ever-changing industry. Through regular critique sessions with our mentor Dewi Lewis, we are finding that the mutual support and development available working in a group far out-weighs our initial doubts of collaboration. This project has been a real eye-opener into the efforts needed to plan, produce and manifest a group project as a strong finished product on our own and with our own means, ever more important in the current D.I.Y climate. The final work will be exhibited as part of the Look 11 International Photography Festival, in Liverpool, from May 2011.
