The Garden of Eden Project by Simon Mack started in 2009 and continues his decade long artistic preoccupation with the often failed ideologies, be they modernity, capitalism or public housing projects in general. After Mack completed his BSc hons Degree in Social Policy in 2002 it further sharpened his artistic focus. A Merseyside born but international in scope, Mack has exhibited since 2000 in Liverpool, London and Berlin in a variety of media with photography increasingly becoming the main method of recordiing and expressing his continued deep concern with the failings of contemporary society. The Garden of Eden is a wry, perhaps bleak title for the project - where the high hopes, ideals of social justice and \"progress\" of the policy makers and progressives are all too often thwarted. The images reflect the fall from grace both in relation to the Biblical story of a failed paradise with Adam and Eve and the all too real day to day reality of our \"paradise\" society today. Each image has been taken on Merseyside whilst on work breaks at various social care venues Mack works at as a care worker. Recent public sector cuts on mainline services such as care provision for adults with learning disabilities adds further resonance to the theme of the tarnished reality, nevermind paradise alluded in the original Garden of Eden.
